The nature of intellectual property is changing. For designers, scientists and engineers, innovation can have widely different meanings, from a novel way to combine carbon atoms into a molecule for the pharmaceutical industry, to a control algorithm for an interplanetary spacecraft. Once, the concepts of novelty and innovation were simply defined in legal terms, and the methods for protecting innovation were clearly defined.

Today, it’s more complicated. Not only is the concept of innovation more nuanced, but the very nature of information is also in play. How much of a human genome is patentable? How much of a copywritten algorithm is defensible? Can artificial intelligence be assigned a patent? The stakes and never been higher, and the difficulties in keeping proprietary information away from competitors, have never been more challenging.

Joining engineering.com on this episode of The Engineering Roundtable are four experts to discuss this complex topic.

This episode is brought to you by Dell Technologies.

The digital twin is perhaps the most important development in computer-aided design since digital rendering. It’s more than a way to digitally represent products and the processes that make them, it’s a parallel engineering world, a place where what if scenarios and experiments can be performed to optimize designs and processes. Digital twin is not only a tool that speeds development in engineering, it’s a vital element of engineering risk management, a way to try things that would be unthinkable in the physical world, with the possibility of a high-value payoff.

Artificial intelligence can offer similar benefits to engineering processes, and is already a critical tool to aid in decision-making. What happens at the confluence of these two important technologies? What are the implications of artificial intelligence operating through the digital twin to change the engineering process?

Joining engineering.com on this episode of The Engineering Roundtable are three experts to discuss these implications:

Todd Edmunds, Global CTO Smart Manufacturing, Edge & Digital Twins, Dell Technologies Global Industries
Jason Nassar, Senior Consultant, Product Management, Dell Technologies Edge Solutions

This episode of The Engineering Roundtable is brought to you by Ansys.

The future is built largely by engineers and designers with the talent and skill to take an idea and turn it into the products and services that enhance life for all of us. Great ideas come from individuals and from gigantic corporations, but the ability to take insight and turn it into marketable products confers a significant advantage on larger corporations. Scale matters, and the meme of the long hours and high stress world of the startup is based in reality.

But does it have to be? What if individuals and small firms had access to the same powerful engineering tools used by multinational corporations, and were freed from the constraints of limited capital and a modest headcount? That’s the promise of cloud connected engineering software, which has implications far beyond simply remote work.

Joining engineering.com on this episode of The Engineering Roundtable are four experts to discuss he implications of these power tools:

Robin Persiaux,  R&D Design engineer, ACWA Robotics
Susan Coleman, Director of Academic and Startup Programs, Ansys
Mark Birch, Global Startup Advocate, Amazon Web Services

This episode of The Engineering Roundtable is brought to you by Dassault Systèmes.

The process of engineering design is undergoing a sea change unlike anything seen since the advent of widespread computer-aided design 40 years ago. CAD made rendering digital, but it didn’t fundamentally change the way in which engineers and designers dreamed, developed, and drew parts and assemblies.

Today, that’s changing. Cloud-based systems allow design software to operate with distributed, fast and sophisticated hardware beyond anything found on a designer’s desk or server room. And that same connectivity allows those designers to collaborate in ways that would be impossible with a conventional design review or engineering meeting. And now, the software itself is taking on some of the design tasks.

Engineering.com spoke with three experts who had notable insight into this fast-evolving environment:

Panelists:

Tim Greenwood, Senior Solution Architect Manager, Dassault Systèmes
Daniel Pyzak, CATIA Mechanical Technical Director, Dassault Systèmes
Kevin O’Donovan, Technology Evangelist

In almost every technology used by human beings, the human machine interface, or HMI, is critical to product performance. Whether it’s an interplanetary spacecraft or a smart phone, mission success and end user satisfaction is highly dependent on the ability of people to access machine functionality easily. For many projects, the HMI can be the pacing item, absorbing a large proportion of developer time and project costs. Development of a great HMI is an art, a science and an engineering challenge, one that requires creativity, careful planning and the right tools.

On this episode of The Engineering Roundtable, we discusses the importance, challenges and future of HMI development with an expert panelist from TomTom and Unity.

Large civil engineering projects, particularly infrastructure projects, have never been more important than in this post COVID-19 era. Global supply chains are shifting, and in America the re-shoring of manufacturing combined with a growing and moving population base means added demands on everything from rural bridge maintenance to large urban housing programs. Building out the 21st century with engineering methodologies that deliver on-time and on budget require the use of sophisticated software-driven tools to manage complexity and deliver value to multiple stakeholders.

Integration of project management, project lifecycle management, design and manufacturing software tools promise to deliver faster, more error proof, more manageable infrastructure projects. Getting multiple stakeholders on the same page has always been difficult, and the same accelerated time-to-market pressures driving American manufacturing also apply to critical infrastructure, which is needed faster than ever before. Is there a single solution to streamline this difficult problem?

This episode of The Engineering Roundtable is brought to you by Altair.

In the history of engineering, there are pivotal developments that changed engineering from art to an applied science. The development of standardized and calibrated systems of measurement, the evolution of rendering into standardized technical drawings, and of course the computer. As a computational aid and as a tool to streamline engineering rendering, computers made the modern world possible, but the art and science of engineering is about to undergo a fundamental, seismic shift: artificial intelligence. AI, and more specifically, generative design, promises to change literally everything about engineering, from basic ideation, to rendering, two-part and product development and manufacturing. Industrial automation seeks to replace human muscle power with machines, but the automation of the engineering process itself promises to change the way humanity lives and works in fundamental ways.

Exascale computing, and widely distributed computing through the cloud allows modern AI driven engineering design software to iterate complex designs millions or billions of times to generate optimized results quickly and at low-cost. And the next generation of generative design (GD) promises to go farther: suggest design, and ultimately create new solutions to existing problems with little or no human intervention at all. GD promises to create the “everything” engineering machine: describe a problem, and get an engineering solution that’s robust, fully simulated, and ready to implement with a very high degree of confidence. That level of sophistication isn’t here yet, but AI and generative design in their current form already shaved weeks and months from development times, and as importantly, reduce error and risk in development programs.

Learn more about how AI and generative design is helping optimize and accelerate products built in today’s factory of the future.

The smart factory has been essential for manufacturing success. Since the dawn of mass production. Traditionally embodied in paper processes and in the minds of manufacturing professionals, modern hardware and software enables production processes to generate, aggregate and process large amounts of relevant data with speed and complexity impossible for human minds to handle in real-time. Success in manufacturing today frequently boils down to a company’s ability to make good decisions based on intelligent use of data aggregated from the shop floor, front office and from the field.

Model based systems engineering, or MBSE, gives engineering teams the ability to control and manage the vast amount of data generated by the modern design and development processes. It’s effective, and like all sophisticated, software-driven engineering systems, must be implemented correctly for best results. MBSE has applications across multiple industries from automotive to aerospace to electronics. Joining engineering.com’s Jim Anderton to discuss where and how MBSE can streamline complex processes is Siemens Digital Industries’ Todd Tuthill, VP of Aerospace & Defense, Nand Kochhar, VP of Automotive & Transportation, Mark Malinoski, MBSE Solutions Director, and CIMdata analyst Don Tolle.

MBSE is an accelerator for every industry. Learn more.
